Preparing Your PSP for Downloading Games

Before you can start downloading games to your memory card, you need to make sure your PSP is ready for it. This involves updating your PSP firmware, installing custom firmware, and formatting your memory card.

Updating Your PSP Firmware

The firmware is the software that runs your PSP system. It determines what features and functions are available on your PSP. To download games to your memory card, you need to have the latest official firmware version 6.61 installed on your PSP. If you have an older firmware version, some downloaded games may not work properly or at all.

To check your firmware version, go to Home -> Settings -> System Information -> System Software on your PSP. If it is lower than 6.61, you need to update it. You can update it over the internet by selecting System Update in the Settings menu if your PSP can connect to a wireless network. Alternatively, you can update it manually by using a computer and a USB cable or a memory card adapter.

To update your firmware manually, follow these steps:

  • Go to in a web browser.

  • Download the firmware update file for your PSP model and region. The file name should be EBOOT.PBP.

  • Connect your PSP to your computer using a USB cable or insert your memory card into a memory card adapter.

  • On your PSP, go to Home -> Settings -> USB Connection and press X to enter USB mode.

  • On your computer, open the PSP folder on your PSP or memory card. If you don't see it, you may need to enable hidden files and folders in your file explorer settings.

  • Create a new folder inside the PSP folder and name it UPDATE. Make sure it is in all caps.

  • Copy the EBOOT.PBP file you downloaded into the UPDATE folder.

  • Disconnect your PSP from your computer or remove your memory card from the adapter.

  • On your PSP, go to Home -> Game -> Memory Stick and select PSP Update ver 6.61. Press X to start the update process.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for the update to finish. Do not turn off your PSP or remove the memory card during the update.

Congratulations, you have updated your PSP firmware to version 6.61. You can now proceed to the next step of installing custom firmware.

Installing Custom Firmware on Your PSP

Custom firmware is a modified version of the official firmware that allows you to run homebrew applications and games that are not authorized by Sony. Custom firmware is necessary for downloading games to your memory card, as most downloaded games are in ISO or CSO format, which are not supported by the official firmware.

To install custom firmware on your PSP, you need to download and run a program called Infinity 2.0. This program will permanently patch your PSP system with custom firmware features, so you don't have to run it every time you turn on your PSP. However, this also means that you cannot revert back to the official firmware, so make sure you are aware of the risks and benefits before proceeding.
